Is Your Car's AC Ready for a Lakeland Summer? Here's Our Checklist.
Is Your Car's AC Ready for a Lakeland Summer? Here's Our Checklist.
Summer in Lakeland is no joke. While our beautiful lakes and sunny skies are perfect for a weekend outing, the intense heat and humidity can be brutal. When the temperature climbs and the afternoon thunderstorms roll in, your car’s air conditioning becomes more than a luxury—it’s a necessity for safe and comfortable driving.
A failing AC system on a scorching day can turn your commute down US-98 or your drive to the Lakeland Square Mall into an unbearable experience. More importantly, it can lead to dangerous overheating for you and your vehicle.
Don't get caught in the heat. Use this simple checklist to make sure your car's AC is ready for a Lakeland summer.
Start With a Simple Performance Test
Before you do anything else, you need a baseline. On a warm day, follow these steps:
- Start Your Car: Let the engine run for a few minutes.
- Set the AC to Max: Turn the fan to the highest speed and set the temperature to the coldest setting. Make sure the air is set to recirculate inside the cabin.
- Feel the Air: Place your hand in front of a vent. Is the air cold, or is it just slightly cool? After a few minutes, you should feel a distinct, crisp chill.
- Check the Vent Temperature: For a more precise test, use a thermometer in the center vent. After about 10 minutes, the temperature should be between 35°F and 45°F. If it’s warmer, your system is likely low on refrigerant or has another issue.
The Visual and Auditory Check
Sometimes, your car will give you clear signs that something is wrong.
● Listen for Unusual Noises: When you turn on the AC, do you hear squealing, clunking, or grinding? Squealing could point to a worn serpentine belt, while clunking might indicate a failing compressor clutch—a common repair we see in our Lakeland shop.
● Look for Stains or Leaks: After your car has been parked for a while, check the ground under the front end for any puddles. Water is normal (it’s condensation from the system). But if you see a greasy, oily film, you likely have a refrigerant leak.
● Pay Attention to Strange Smells: A musty, mildew-like smell when the AC kicks in is a classic sign of mold or bacteria growing in the system. This is especially common in Florida's humid climate and means your cabin air filter needs replacing and the system needs a cleaning.
The 5-Point AC Readiness Checklist
Go through each of these points to gauge your AC's health. If you answer "no" to any of them, it's time for a professional inspection.
1. Is Your Cabin Air Filter Clean?
Your cabin air filter is your first line of defense against pollen, dust, and allergens. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing your AC to work harder and cool less effectively. With Polk County's high pollen counts, this filter should be replaced regularly.
2. Is the Refrigerant Level Correct?
Refrigerant is the lifeblood of your AC system. Over time, it can slowly leak out. A low level is the most common cause of weak cooling. Only a certified technician should handle refrigerant, as it requires special equipment to recover and recharge correctly.
3. Is the Condenser Free of Debris?
The condenser, located in front of your radiator, releases heat from the refrigerant. If it's clogged with leaves, bugs, or road grime from Lakeland's roads, it can't do its job. Gently spraying it with water can help clear surface blockages.
4. Are the Belts and Hoses in Good Condition?
Florida's extreme heat can cause rubber components to dry out, crack, and become brittle. A visual inspection of the AC compressor belt and hoses can reveal wear that could lead to a total system failure.
5. Is the Compressor Engaging Properly?
Pop the hood and have a helper turn the AC on and off. You should see the center of the AC compressor clutch quickly engage and disengage. If it doesn't move, or makes a loud click, the compressor or its clutch may have failed.
Why Lakeland Summers Are Tough on Car AC Systems
Our local climate creates the perfect storm for AC problems. The constant high heat and humidity forces your system to run longer and work harder than in milder climates. This extra strain accelerates wear on components like the compressor and condenser. Furthermore, our daily use of the AC, even in the so-called "winter" months, means the system gets very little rest, leading to a shorter overall lifespan.
Don't Sweat It This Summer—Let Joyce Automotive Help
A malfunctioning AC system is more than an inconvenience. It can make your car unsafe to drive and lead to costly repairs if a small leak turns into a compressor failure.
If your checklist revealed any problems, or if it's just been over a year since your AC was last serviced, it's time for a professional inspection. At Joyce Automotive and Towing in Lakeland, our ASE-certified technicians can perform a comprehensive AC performance test. We will pinpoint the exact issue, provide a clear and honest estimate, and get your system blowing cold again.
